New York’s energy consumption is among the highest of all 50 states, equaling 4.1 percent of the U.S. total. Of all of the energy consumed in the state, only 11 percent comes from renewable sources like hydropower and biofuels.
There are many steps the state Legislature can take. A wide range of mandates, regulations and incentives would boost the amount of solar, wind and other renewable energies produced in New York and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. But without an energy plan, New York lags behind states like California, Washington and Oregon in producing clean power.
The need for Albany’s action cannot be overstated. The federal government in Washington has taken few meaningful steps to wean the nation away from fossil fuels, leaving it up to our state leaders to take a leadership role in laying the foundation for a clean, secure and affordable energy future for New York.
